The Vintages of Château Garraud 2006 2005 2004 2003 2005 2001 2000 1999 1998 1997 1996 1995 1994
2006 Color : Limpid, deep garnet red. Nose: Ripe black fruit aromas dominate the oak, which is starting to integrate. Palate : Good acidity on the clean attack, the intensely ripe Merlot offers great volume supported by tight tannins. Climatic conditions : An excellent year with several important rains in March and also several hot periods in July et September. A very good flowering in June. Harvesting at full ripeness began September 18. Ageing potential: 2010-2015
2005 Color : Very dark, deep ruby. Nose: Ripe black fruit aromas dominate, toasty, vanilla notes complement the aromatic balance perfectly. Palate : Clean attack followed by lavish volume buttressed by solid, dense tannins, excellent length, warm and mellow. Climatic conditions : Cold winter, hot spring and summer with above normal temperatures. Good flowering, excellent harvesting conditions in September and October. Harvest began September 14. Ageing potential: 2010-2016 The Press Garraud 2005 : 16 Big colour, smoky cassis fruit. Good fleshy wine, firm backbone, good lengh. 2009-16. James Lawther, Decanter June 2006 (UK) Garraud, Lalande de Pomerol 2005 : 85-88. Good amount of berry fruit on the nose. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a fresh finish. James Stuckling, Wine Spectator, Website April 2006. (USA)
2004 Color : Dense, deep garnet. Nose : Bottling has closed the nose of this vintage, the ripe red fruit aromas are momentarily more discrete than the oak aromas. Palate : Plenty of volume, the firm yet ripe tannins are still present. The finish is long and warm. Climatic conditions : Cold, dry winter. Rapid, homogenous flowering under good conditions resulting in a potentially heavy crop. Rainy August, beautiful September. Harvest began September 27. Ageing potential: 2009-2014 The Press Garraud 2004 ***, Lalande de Pomerol. This must-have 2004 from the Libourne region is not as plump as the 2003, but full-bodied and complex, hearty and lively. Guide Chartier 2008 (Canada)
2003
Color : Beautiful deep red, slightly purple, limpid.
Nose : The oak is not completely integrated at this stage of barrel aging, but is developing aromas of caramel and toast that accompany notes of ripe red fruit. Palate : A well-balanced attack precedes great volume supported by a harmonious tannic structure. The warm length is persistent.
Climatic conditions : Rainy weather during flowering caused significant coulure (shatter). Summer was dry and the hottest in half a century, resulting in a crop less than a third of the normal size over the last fifty years. The harvest began on September 9. Ageing ability : 2008-2013 The Press Château Garraud 2003 : A very aromatic vintage, quite rich, ample, generous and velvety, yet nourished and persistent, with notes of plum, roasted coffee and graphite. Michel Phaneuf, Guide Phaneuf 2008 (Canada) Château Garraud 2003 : Another wonderful mouthfilling wine with perfectly ripe fruit, comfortably coating all taste buds in its path. Fine woody notes linger on the palate as you daydream. Serve with veal scallops in a cream sauce. Jean Aubry, Le devoir.com 01/09/06 (Canada)
2002
Color :
Deep, very limpid color with purple-violet highlights.
Nose
: At present, the wood tends to dominate with notes of toast and vanilla, but the fresh fruit aromas are just waiting to blossom in the bottle.
Palate :
After a straightforward attack, the mid-palate has great texture and no
harshness thanks to the lush tannins. The finish is persistent and
unctuous.
Climatic conditions: A lack of rain for most of the year, with several cloudy cold spells. The flowering of the Merlots was noticeably affected by a cold wave that forced several flowers to abort (coulure) or produce tiny berries that did not develop (millerandage). They had to be eliminated manually on sorting
tables. The volume of the crop was significantly reduced, but the harvest took place under sunny skies from September 28.
Ageing ability : 2006-2010

Since entering Quebec in 1998, this wine producer
has developed a select group of loyal followers over the years, who buy
the vintages arriving on the market with their eyes shut.
And they’re right to do so !
For this wine is always regular and constantly well-finished. The best
technical approach the vintage has to offer shows through every time.
This 2002, colored and fragrant, offers a fine, elegant tannic frame,
with just enough wood to support the whole.
Snap up this wine from the same producer : Château l'Ancien, 100% Merlot
simply amazing, whatever the vintage.
Try it with rib steak and cepe mushrooms.

Garraud 2002, Lalande de Pomerol, Coup de Cœur
*** ½ .
The inventive enologist Vincent Duret really brought it off in 2002, even outdoing some Pomerols sold for twice the price! The result is a wine with the irresistible fragrance of violet, black fruit, and judiciously integrated wood in the heart of the wine, which is not the case for all 2002’s, some of which are too woody to compensate for a lack of maturity. This wine is mouthfilling, voluptuous, textured, and displays
amazingly ripe tannins. Freshness and flavors of coffee, raspberry and black cherry linger on the finish.
Really good ! La Sélection Chartier 2005 - (Canada)
Garraud 2002 (Lalande de Pomerol) : The seal of quality. Very good. Mundus Vini 2005, Der Grosse Internationale Weinpreis 2005 - (Germany)
Garraud – Wines of consistent, dependable quality year after year. A tender, round wine with lots of body. The 2002 vintage, with aromas of fresh fruit that only aspire to develop in the bottle, should improve sufficiently to reach its apogee between 2008 and 2010.

An excellent wine
Color : Very black with purple highlights.
Nose :
Still closed. Attractive fruit and notes of fine wood.
Taste : A good entry precedes plenty of volume, the tannins are present yet supple, the finish is long.

Rainy, mild winter. Rapid, homogenous flowering. Though veraison was heterogeneous, it developed under good conditions. Very sunny August and September, with some rain showers. Harvest
began September 26.

Garraud 2001, Highly recommended ****. With 19 ha of vines (95% Merlot)Vignobles Léon Nony has also propelled itself into quality. The 2001 is a successful combination of velvety tannins and dense fruit that results from low yields of Merlot. Nony also produces Château l'Ancien and Château Treytins. Garraud 2001, Lalande de Pomerol, Coup de Cœur
*** ½ .
Along the lines of the excellent 2002 from the same Château, but with a little more intense concentration and ripe fruit. The color is very saturated. The nose is rich and complex, marked by slightly candied fruit, especially upon aeration, easily giving rise to notes of blueberry and raspberry. There is good volume in the mouth with all the richness you could wish for. Enveloping, the tannins are very ripe and the flavors more than persistent. Almost a Pomerol… but less expensive !
La Sélection Chartier 2005 - (Canada)
Garraud 2001 Lalande de Pomerol *** ½ - Beautiful saturated
ruby-purple. Always attractive, this Bordeaux offers a 2001 with a very
Médoc-like nose of mineral notes, hints of mushroom, tobacco, cedar, and
roasted aromas against a very ripe black fruit background. In the mouth it
is full and supple, quite fluid, with ripe, juicy fruit, notes of black
currant, toffee, and hints of mineral. Exceedingly fine tannins are
enveloped by the substance of the wine, which is balanced and quite
accessable. Drink it until 2011.

Garraud 2001, Lalande de Pomerol,
*** Coup de Cœur. A Bordeaux that holds its own in a classic vintage, with tightly-knit, concentrated flavors, although a bit closed and unexpressive overall. Decant two hours in advance or hold until 2007. A wine with indisputable potential that would enrich any cellar if given the time to mature, similar to an investment. Marc Chaplaud, Vins & Vignobles, September 2005 - (Canada)
Garraud 2001 (Lalande de Pomerol) : This lovely Lalande de Pomerol 2001 Château Garraud offers loads of pleasure at a very reasonable price. Enjoy the charm and finesse of its bouquet with nuances of very ripe black fruit, and the velvetiness and distinction of its tannins. Not overly concentrated. Delicious. ***(*). Jacques Benoit, Saveurs - (Canada)
Garraud 2001 (Lalande de Pomerol) : Good year, bad year, this « mini Pomerol » is always polished and balanced, never powerful, but rather harmonious and round. Indeed, the 2001 is not the deepest, but the density and purity of its fruit, subtly highlighted by notes of vanilla, largely compensate. This distinguished wine will probably develop rapidly, and should at its peak between 2006 and 2009 ***.

Garraud 2001 **. This great vineyard, created in the 19th century by the Count of Kermartin, has been owned by the Nony family since 1939. It is located in Néac on clay-limestone soil and is planted with Merlot (three quarters) and Cabernet Franc (one quarter). The 2001 first seduces with its sumptuous purple
color. The bouquet is elegant and racy, with aromas of cooked red and black fruit, cocoa, and toast. The palate is fleshy, full, concentrated, rich, and dense. A very fine wine for cellaring at an interesting price.
Guide Hachette 2005, (France)
Garraud 2001 ****. The nose is refined and powerful, just like the palate, which offers fresh, suave texture and very powerful aromas.

Garraud 2001 - Quite a serious wine with ripe fruit, firm tannic structure and good length. Ready 2004-2008.
Decanter, June 2002, (UK)
Garraud 2001 - Among the 10 wines I would seriously consider buying as futures (89-91). Intense tar and tobacco aromas, with hints of ripe fruit. Full - to medium - bodied, with very fine tannins. Better than many Pomerols. I don’t know a thing about it, but it’s seriously good. Almost 92-94.

Garraud 1997. Despite the vintage, this is a Bordeaux with ripe fruit. It is well-endowed, yet not too deep on the palate, lively and energetic, with slightly mush roomy flavors. Le Journal de Montréal, 13 October 2001, (Canada) In the same vein as the Bordeaux 1997, look for Château Garraud Lalande de Pomerol, with absolute velvetiness and persistent flavors ***½, and Château Treytins 1997 ***. Le Devoir de Montréal, 14 May 2001, (Canada) Garraud 1997.. This property has modernized over time and now employs techniques to improve quality in the vineyard as well as the cellar. The 1997 is the proof. A dark, dense color is followed by powerful, elegant aromas of very ripe red fruit (raspberries, blackcurrants), tobacco, vanilla. The fleshy, fine tannins develop with suaveness, harmony and persistence. This wine has what it takes to seduce wine lovers in the coming three to eight years. An example for the vintage. Garraud 1996. In the vast range of satellite appellations "orbiting" to the east of the Dordogne, Lalande-de-Pomerol and, in its midst, Garraud, are to be explored for their ability to dethrone a good number of cru bourgeois lazing about to the west of the Gironde. We are talking serious stuff here: great finesse, but especially a resolutely
"earthling" presence, revealing the Merlot (seconded by Cabernet) in all the detail that this splendid terroir is capable of. Attractive saturated ruby-garnet with a distinguished aromatic profile suggesting rose, blackcurrant and toasty spices, nicely assembled without any harshness. Firm, velvety fruitiness, long and well defined. A beautiful wine for long keeping but also a beautiful wine for the evening and rich conversations. Garraud 1995 , A beautiful object of desire if not greed. ***1/2.
Le Devoir, Wine-pleasure, July 28, 2000, (Canada)
Garraud. Created in the 19th century, this château produced a pleasant 1996 with delicate aromas of strawberry, vanilla and toast, marked by a supple, deep tannic structure, evolving towards a certain austerity. This wine should find its harmony after two or three years of aging in a good cellar. Guide Hachette 2000, (France) Château Garraud 1996 will surely become a regular of this column and those of some of my peers in Montréal. The reason? It keeps getting better year after year. It’s true that the 95 was better than the 94, but it was already a little superior to most of the 1994 Lalande that came to Quebec. It is also a well-made vintage that the talents of the French flying winemaker, Michel Rolland, are expressed. Now that deserves a great deal of respect. The powerful, noble aromas of mushroom, dried herbs and black fruits proclaim a style that is clearly French, and Bordelais to boot. The palate is very condensed and smooth with a notable fruit, all elegantly displayed with beautiful length. It’s like a voyage through the ages, through the evolution of all the winemaking techniques leading to a sort of archetype. The Garraud 1995 is one. Le Nouvelliste, Découvertes récentes, October 2, 1999, (Canada) Garraud 1996. 16/20, Beautiful garnet/ruby color, with ripe red fruits, vanilla, spices and elder on the nose. ****.
After a very good 1993 sold last year, this Lalande de Pomerol property is pursuing its quest for quality with a
very good 1995, benefiting from the generosity of the vintage. Very open, round and juicy, supported by silky tannins, with a notion of firmness in the finish adding liveliness. Naturally supple, it already makes for pleasant drinking. Le Guide du Vin 2000, Michel Phaneuf, (Canada) Garraud 1995 is unquestionably the star of the vintage in this appellation. Garraud 1994. The owners have invested a lot to make Garraud one of the leaders of the appellation. Blueberry jelly, violet, blackberry in the nose, fat, rich, thick tannins, plenty of extraction. The palate still has not
mellowed. Good balance for this long-keeping wine. Gault Millau, Special Vins, September 1995, (France)
Garraud 1994. An attractive, racy wine, concentrated and complex with a subtle nose and an ample entry, silky, tightly-knit. Elegant and profound, it will evolve very well. La Revue du Vin de France, Vintage 94, June 1995, (France)
